Try A DIY Floral Party Hat For Every Special Occasion

Browse the latest bouquets in our collection below

Party hats are a variety of festive hats, usually a conical hat made from a thin piece of paperboard, normally with designs painted on the outside and strapped to the wearer’s chin by a long string of elastic. They represent and symbolize celebration and informality. Also when worn by a birthday celebrant, party hats are a way of “crowning them for the day”.

Initially, birthday celebrations were the only occasions when party hats are worn, especially if the birthday person is a youngster. The birthday person normally dons a crown while the other guests wear cones. Party hats were also worn during New Year’s Eve festivities or if someone felt like acting wacky or adorable in general. However, what stops you from wearing a party hat anytime you wish to any occasion you wish? Absolutely nothing! Who knows, you could even set a new trend.

Want To DIY A Floral Party Hat? Follow These Steps

Here are 4 easy steps on how to create your own party hat!

Materials you’ll need include: Card stock paper, stapler, scissors, glue, string/ribbon/elastic and items to decorate like stickers, streamers, felt-tipped pens, glitter and anything else of your choice.

PROCEDURE

  1. Cut the card stock paper into a circle by trimming its corners. Then, make a thin triangle by cutting from the outside edge of the circle to its centre. The cutout ought to be wider on the outside and taper into the circle’s centre. To find the centre, fold your circle equally in half top to bottom, lightly crease it, and then unfold it. Your circle should now be folded evenly in half from left to right, lightly creased, and then reopened. The centre of your circle, which should now be a small spot in the middle, is now visible.
  2. By overlapping the two cut corners—the two bottom edges of the triangle—you can fold the paper into a cone shape. The amount by which you overlap determines how the hat fits. The cone can be as big or as small as you choose, but it must be large enough to fit on your head (or whoever is to wear it). When you’re finished, staple the paper at the seam.
  3. Now is the time to get inventive. Add all the decorations you want; glitter, jewels, stickers, and others. You can use lace, ribbon, colourful paper, or any other kind of material to add a decorative border to the bottom of your hat. If you like, you may even put a ball of yarn on the top.
  4. On each side of the bottom of the party hat, make two circular holes. Use paper reinforcement rings to reinforce the holes. These are widely available in a variety of colours and are available at any office supply store. Additionally, you can strengthen the holes by covering them with a layer or two of clear tape and repunching the holes through the tape. Then get your string/ribbon/elastic (you’re gonna need this to strap the hat to your head), adjust the length so that it fits your head, and fasten it by tying knots on both sides.

And your hat is done!

Tips In Making Floral Party Hats That You Should Be Aware

  • When cutting your circle in STEP 1 above, make sure the diameter is 9 inches if the hat is meant for a child and 10 inches if it’s for an adult.
  • To determine where to create the holes in STEP 4, place the hat on your head like you’ll wear it when you’re finished. Make small dots with a pencil just in front of your ears, and then puncture each one.
  • To add a little more decoration, you can use coloured washi tape to tape the seam rather than stapling the two overlapped cut corners in STEP 2.
