Easy Guide of Orchid Flower Care

Orchids are a beautiful and distinct type of flowering plants that are also very diverse. So many people like to keep these plants for several reasons such as their colorful blooms, the fragrance of their flowers, and their overall beauty. The orchid family has over 880 different types (genera) and over 22,000 different species. They are not like traditional potted plants – they’re epiphytes. This means that they don’t grow in the dirt but rather by hanging on to the bark of trees. Some orchids, like the lady slipper orchid, are semi-terrestrial and grow in the loamy soil of the jungle floor. Others are lithophytes, which refers to an orchid growing on or among rocks.

If you have an interest in growing orchids or if you already are, you at least need to learn a thing or two about these plants and how to care for them. In this article, we’ll look at a few fun facts about the characteristics of orchids and easy rules of taking care of orchids.

Fun Fact About the Characteristics of Orchid Flower

When a plant family is as diverse as the orchids, it means that there’s so much to learn if you’re an orchid grower. Let’s learn some fun facts about these popular houseplants:

  1. They’re the largest family of flowering plants with varieties found all over the world.
  2. Orchids are one of oldest families of flowering plants. It’s believed that they have been around even before the continents separated.
  3. The smallest orchid is the size of a dime while the largest can weigh up to a couple of hundred pounds.
  4. The flowers are bilaterally symmetrical, meaning that they can be divided in the middle to give perfect halves.
  5. Orchids grow to maturity in 5-7 years after germination and can live for a hundred years. Orchid bloom takes place several times a year. Mature orchids grow upside down because the blooms are so heavy.
  6. The Vanilla Orchid gives us vanilla beans. This variety is the only orchid that’s grown commercially.
  7. A single seedpod can have up to 3 million seeds inside. These seeds are the tiniest in the world and can only be seen under a microscope.
  8. Some orchids bloom for mere hours and others for months, depending on the species.
  9. The part of the orchid where the flowers and buds grow is known as the flowering spike, orchid spike, or stem.
  10. Orchids with predominantly white flowers are called Phalaenopsis orchids. There’s something about the white flowers that commands attention.

5 Easy Rules of Taking Care of the Orchid Flower

Orchid flowers have diverse care needs depending on the type of plant. However, there are some general basic care instructions that you can follow when caring for your orchid plants. Moth orchids, butterfly orchids, and the Miltonia orchid are some of the most popular and easy to care for orchids.

Here are five easy rules to follow:

  1. Avoid planting them in plain soil as most orchids will die in this type of medium. They require a growing medium such as soil and bark that allows for good drainage and air circulation.
  2. For an orchid living indoors, keep it in a location where there is indirect sunlight. They should receive at least 12hours of moderate light daily.
  3. Water them once a week, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between each watering to avoid root rot. Keep in mind that the right amount of water could be as harmful as excess water if the pot isn’t well-drained. Use distilled or recently boiled and cooled tap water.
  4. Fertilize the potting medium using a water-soluble orchid fertilizer to enable it to grow and flower properly. Avoid over-fertilizing the plant as it’ll cause more harm than good.
  5. Ensure that the humidity levels are between 40 and 60 percent. Most orchids do well when there’s moisture in the air.

Conclusion

Are you new to the world of orchids? This flowering plant makes an excellent house plant but has a reputation for being difficult to keep alive. But from this article, you can see that they aren’t high maintenance and anyone can easily grow them as long as he/she learns what they need. Overall, orchids are surprisingly easy to care for and it’s entirely possible to keep an orchid living for years.
