Most people associate the orchid only with its most popular variety, i.e. Phalaenopsis, which dominated almost all florist shops and supermarkets. However, there are many more members of the orchid family. Orchids are the second largest group of flowering plants, which has as many as 30,000 species: it is estimated that 10% of the world’s plants are orchids. They grow on almost every (except Antarctic) continent. Moreover, orchids are an important part of the Singaporean identity. The rich Singaporean Botanic Gardens contain countless types of orchids, varying in colours and shapes. As the national flower of the city, the orchid is also the most beloved by the Singaporeans: Vanda Miss Joaquin (Princess Aloha) orchid, also called the Singapore orchid, is a hybrid flower cultivated in Singapore and a symbol of the city. It is a resilient and year-round blooming flower, known to represent Singapore’s uniqueness and hybrid culture. However, apart from the beautiful Vanda Miss Joaquin, there are many more interesting orchid types to see in the city.

During The Orchid Show 2019 the Botanic Garden in Singapore together with the Orchid Society of South East Asia will present many kinds of the most beautiful orchids. The tour guides will explain the history and characteristics of these unique flowers and the marketplace will feature many kinds of orchids for sale. However, before buying one, it is good to learn some history of these flowers to know how to choose the best orchids.

Singapore orchids guide

• Singapore orchid: as already mentioned above, the beautiful Vanda Miss Joaquin is the symbol of Singapore. It was created in the 19^th century by Miss Agnes Joaquin, a lady residing in the city. The flower was the first registered orchid hybrid from Singapore. It has delicate petals in pink and white colours with an orange centre and grows to 40-50 cm before it begins to bloom. This stunning orchid is especially beautiful when grown in vase. It will be a perfect decoration for a proud Singaporean home.
• Cattleya orchid: Cattleya is sometimes referred to as ‘’the orchid queen’’ and it fully deserves this name. This beautiful flower is considered a symbol of love, luxury and sophisticated beauty. It was created by William Cattley, a botanist from Glasgow in the 19^th century. In order to flourish, the Cattleya orchid needs a lot of sunshine. These flowers are huge and usually reach several centimetres. They decorate the plant for 2-6 weeks and many of them smell very sweet. It is favoured by many people due to its delicate scent.
• Dancing-lady orchid: also known as the Oncidium orchid, this delicate flower was first discovered in South America. It has got small petals shaped like butterfly wings. It can have many different colours but the pink and yellow are the most common. It is so delicate that it would make for a perfect orchid flower bouquet, especially when paired with other flowers.
• Boat orchid: officially known as Cymbidium orchid, this orchid type includes over 60 species found in natural conditions in Southeast Asia and Australia. It grows mainly on the branches of trees. The boat orchid is a popular flower and a wonderful decorative plant, perfect for a flower bouquet or to grow in pots. It looks especially good in elegant vase.
