However, there are many more members of the orchid family. Orchids are the second largest group of flowering plants, which has as many as 30,000 species: it is estimated that 10% of the world’s plants are orchids. They grow on almost every (except Antarctic) continent. Moreover, orchids are an important part of the Singaporean identity. The rich Singaporean Botanic Gardens contain countless types of orchids, varying in colours and shapes. As the national flower of the city, the orchid is also the most beloved by the Singaporeans: Vanda Miss Joaquin (Princess Aloha) orchid, also called the Singapore orchid, is a hybrid flower cultivated in Singapore and a symbol of the city. It is a resilient and year-round blooming flower, known to represent Singapore’s uniqueness and hybrid culture. However, apart from the beautiful Vanda Miss Joaquin, there are many more interesting orchid types to see in the city.
