Wondering how to decorate your house for Christmas?

Christmas is the most important festival for Christians and a unique time when families and friends gather together to celebrate the birth of Jesus and exchange gifts. For those of us who aren’t Christians, Christmas is associated with its beautiful atmosphere and decorations: Christmas trees, colourful gifts, snowy decorations, Christmas movies, Santa, snowman and, of course, Christmas rings (also related to as Christmas wreaths).

Many families make their own Christmas decorations, including rings, just because it is an enormous fun. A handmade Christmas ring brings a lot of joy to the household and making it is easier than you think. However, why is the ring so important and what does it mean to Christians?

The meaning of Christmas ring

The Christmas ring and each of its parts have symbolic significance for Christians. The circular shape and evergreen branches remind us of eternal life after death. Sometimes Christians place four candles on the Christmas ring what symbolizes hope and corresponds to the four Sundays of Advent (in the Christian religion, Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas). In some countries, this colourful ring is placed on the door to welcome the coming Christmas.

Traditionally, the ring would be also placed above the fireplace: as the fireplace was the warmest place in the house, the family members liked to gather around it what made it a perfect spot for any Christmas decorations. The ring as a whole expresses the joy of waiting for the birth of Jesus.

No matter if you celebrate Christmas with your family or just throw a quick Christmas party, a colourful Christmas ring decoration will add a lot of joy to your house. On the wall, this Christmas attribute will remind the household members about the approaching of the great holiday, and on the door, it will symbolize the generosity of the hosts and the willingness to share this solemn event with the guests. To make your house prepared for Christmas, check the guide below of how to make an easy DIY ring for front door.

How to make your own Christmas ring: a quick guide

To make a Christmas ring you will need:

  • a simple thin hanger (or a cardboard and pencil)
  • flexible green wire (or hot glue)
  • pliers (to cut the wire when needed)
  • scissors
  • small decorations of choice (like pine cones or little Christmas bulbs)
  • twigs of fir, pine, juniper and holly (or mahogany); you can also use a simple green chain if you want to make an artificial Christmas ring
  • red ribbon

The making process step by step

Step 1: We start by making the green base. Stretch the hanger to make it round like a circle. You can also draw a thick circle on a cardboard and cut it out if you don’t want to sacrifice the hanger. Attach pine branches (or the green chain) to the hanger and wrap it with the flexible wire. You can also use a hot glue to attach the chain. Cut the excessive amount of the chain.

Step 2: If you managed to get the green base done, your chain is almost ready. Now attach the decorations. In the minimalistic variant, simply decorate the ring with red ribbon bows (glue them or tie them with a thin thread) and attach a few pine cones to the ring. However, you can also go for different decorations, such as small Christmas bulbs.

Step 3: Place your Christmas ring on the front door (you may need a hook for that). You can also place it somewhere in your house, for example in the living room. Your house is now ready for Christmas!
