You also need to think about the seasonal availability too. While some flowers such as lilies and gerberas are available throughout the year, other varieties of flowers may only be available during the wet or the dry season. So whether you’re choosing flowers for your wedding, a bouquet for a loved one, or simply a striking display to feature in your home or office, here’s how to choose a flower bouquet in both the wet and dry seasons.
Choosing flowers for your bouquet during the wet season
Stocks are always a popular choice for bouquets. Available in white, pink and purple, their upright stems of clustered flowers will add structure, colour and scent to any arrangement. And if you want to give the gift of scented flowers, who can resist the gorgeous perfume of Sweet Peas? These come in a variety of colours, ranging from pure white through to the darkest burgundy and purple, and make a very natural and rustic looking bouquet for an October wedding or special occasion.
Camellias are also a popular choice for weddings. Known as the Queen of Winter Flowers, these beautiful blooms were a favourite of Coco Chanel. Their waxy petals are offset by glossy foliage and come in a range of colours including crisp white, blush pink, vibrant corals and even deep, dark crimson.
With its feathery fronds surrounding paper like flowers of blue, pink and white, Love in the Mist will add an ethereal feel to any bouquet. For those that prefer pure white flowers, Lily of the Valley have a lovely sweet scent and bloom delicate bell-shaped flowers. The flower is also known as ‘Our Lady’s Tears’ as it’s believed that the flower sprang from the tears of the weeping Virgin Mary during the crucifixion of Christ.
The little star shaped flowers which make up Hyacinth stems come in a variety of colours from white through to pink, hot pink, lilac and purple. Hyacinths are vibrant in appearance, highly fragrant and combine perfectly with sweet peas and anemones.
Ranunculus have paper-thin folds of petals surrounding a button centre and come in a gorgeous array of colours such as plum, violet and crimson, through to soft corals, pinks and pristine white. Ranunculus add a lush texture to any kind of floral arrangement.
Choosing flowers for your bouquet during the dry season
There’s a wide choice of flowers available during this time that come in a variety of colours, ranging from soft creams, pinks and lilacs through to vibrant oranges, deeper plums, crimsons and violets.
At Christmas time, the pure white trumpet-shaped Stephanotis make a wonderful addition to any flower bouquet. With its dark shiny foliage, snowy flowers and incredible scent, it’s a very popular choice for wedding bouquets, particularly the more natural trailing type of bouquet.
If you’re looking to add lilac and purple flowers to your bouquet, you can’t go wrong with the round, starry headed Allium, or the star shaped Agapanthus or African Lily. All of these flowers will add both colour and texture to your bouquet. If you’re looking for something completely different, the large purple flower of the Artichoke can be used to great effect in larger bouquets or as table decorations.
For lovers of pink flowers, nothing beats the simplicity of the Peony. Whether you choose hot pink or a soft pink bloom, these large flower heads make striking bouquets. Their paper thin petals pair well with hydrangeas and gardenias.
Speaking of hydrangeas, this old-fashioned flower has regained popularity, especially with the modern bride. With its flat petals creating a large bulbous head, they’re perfect for table decorations.
For a more simplistic bouquet featuring just one flower, the Parrot Tulip lends itself well to this type of arrangement. Available in a variety of colours, including white, green, red, pink, purple and orange to name a few, they’re perfect for creating an understated yet eye-catching bouquet.
