Lilies are gorgeous flowers. Whether used to brighten up gardens or to decorate homes in beautiful arrangements, lilies are adored everywhere in the world. There are more than 100 different types of lilies that come in a stunning array of shades and shapes – the Easter lily is one of these.

Easter lilies are characteristic for their pure white colour, long stems, their meaning of simplicity and their striking beauty. They are also popular around Easter time (like their name suggests). Continuing reading to discover six interesting facts about this bloom.

About lilies

The lily is a perennial plant (which means that it can survive more than two years in the wild) that grows well in both spring or summer. Its size depends on the species, but typically they can grow from 0.6 to 1.8 m in height, carrying four to eight blossoms. Blooms can open at different times – that’s why most lilies live from one to two weeks.

Lilies come in a variety of different shades; including white, yellow, pink, red and orange. Some even have a deeper colour (or freckles) on the inner petal; and others; such as the tiger lily, feature spots all over them. White lily, Easter lily and tiger lily are some the most well-known and prefered varieties.

1. Easter lilies and lilies are really popular

Lilies grow well and are found in a variety of places around the world, including Canada, the USA, India, East Asia, Australia and Europe. Following the rose, the lily flower is the second most favourite flower in the world – that’s why it’s widely used in floral arrangements and bouquets.

Easter lilies are quite popular during Easter time – they are considered a traditional Easter treat. Native to the southern islands of Japan, legend has it they came into the Northern Hemisphere after an American soldier brought Easter lily bulbs on his suitcase when he came back home from the war in 1919.

2. They don’t naturally bloom for Easter

Just like any other type of lily, Easter lilies are dormant in winter and autumn – which means they have to be forced into bloom so they can be ready for Easter time. Because they have been forced into bloom under controlled conditions, Easter lilies purchased around Easter time should be handled extra carefully and may require special care.

3. Its meaning is associated with hope and purity

In Christian tradition, Easter lilies are a beautiful symbol of the Easter season. Christians believe this flower represents chastity, innocence, redefined beauty, joy, hope, peace, simplicity, modesty, purity and new beginnings – just like Christ’s resurrection. The Easter lily also represents a new season and a new birth. The Easter lily is indeed a biblical flower – mentioned frequently throughout the bible.

4. They have a long vase life

Lilies, including Easter lilies, feature a long vase life. There are some tricks you can do if you’d like to extend their vase life even further. First, make sure you remove all pollen found in the flower, and the yellow anthers from the flower centres. This not only prolongs the life of the blossoms – but also prevents the pollen on the anthers from staining the flowers, your hands, clothing, tablecloths and rugs. It’s also great for allergy sufferers, as lilies can be quite allergy-triggering. In addition, place the lilies in bright but indirect sunlight and protect it from heat sources (such as fireplaces or heaters) and drafts.

5. The Egyptians used lilies as perfume

The ancient Egyptians were one of the first civilisations to use cosmetics and and perfume. Some of their most precious scents were made with lilies – they use its extracts in their scented oils and ointments. Aside from moisturising qualities, the oil extracted from the lily can be nowadays used for massage, as a facial moisturiser, under-eye oil and hot-oil treatment. Lilies are also used in perfumes nowadays.

6. They are toxic to cats

Lilies may be beautiful – but they are highly toxic to cats. Felines must be kept away from all kinds of lilies, as if they ingest them, it can cause kidney failure and death. Even a small amount of pollen can be fatal to your furry friend. A good way of prevention is to refrain from purchasing lilies at all and avoid planting them in your garden, as cats are highly intelligent, agile and curious – which is a recipe for disaster if you’re trying to keep a bouquet of flowers away from them.

Easter lilies, and lilies in general, are stunning flowers that’ll sure bring joy into every room of garden they’re featured on. While Easter lilies have historically been associated with the Christian tradition of Easter and symbolize purity, hope, simplicity and new beginnings, Easter lilies naturally bloom throughout spring and summer – so make sure you grab your next Easter lily bouquet in the warmer months.
